In Memoriam: Robert A. F. Thurman (1941-2026)

We mourn the passing of Robert A. F. Thurman, a peerless scholar of Buddhism, fearless champion of the Tibetan cause, and genuine friend of the Tibetan people. 

Bob was one of the great pillars of the Tibetan freedom movement. His unwavering support for the Tibetan cause, particularly his friendship and collaboration with Tibet Action Institute and Students for a Free Tibet, helped shape generations of activists. He and his wife Nena strengthened the Tibet movement in countless ways, from welcoming us at Tibet House and Menla, to contributing knowledge and insight to the advocacy work, to providing inspiration in the darkest of times. 

Bob was always full of life, warmth, wisdom, laughter and mischief. He was always there at the March 10 rallies to commemorate the Tibetan Uprising Day. One time, he gave his entire speech in Tibetan outside the United Nations, electrifying the Tibetan crowd and confusing passersby. 

He deeply understood Tibet, he spoke fluent Tibetan, he knew exactly what was at stake, the loss of our homeland, our culture and our identity. He encouraged us to dig deeper, learn more about Tibetan Buddhism, and dedicate ourselves to the cause. He never stopped believing that Tibet would be free one day.

Thank you, Bob, for believing in us, challenging us, and standing beside Tibet for so many decades. We will carry your legacy forward and continue the work until Tibet is free.
