Junior Developer and Sysadmin

Tibet Action Institute’s dynamic and curated global team of campaigners, technology experts and thought leaders carry over 20  years of experience, working with Tibetans and other communities living under repression by promoting human rights through educational programs, training, and cutting edge tech development.

Position

You will play a pivotal role in safeguarding and managing the digital infrastructure of Tibet Action Institute and TibCERT(Tibetan Computer Emergency Readiness Team). As a key member of the team, you will work closely with the Senior System Administrator and TibCERT Response Coordinator to ensure the security, functionalities and resilience of our organization’s websites and critical TibCERT infrastructure. Your role will encompass a wide range of responsibilities, including implementing robust security measures to protect our infrastructure and proactively addressing digital security threats.

This is a contract position based in Dharamshala, India and may require travel.

Responsibilities

WordPress Website Management

• Oversee the end-to-end management of Tibet Action’s WordPress-based website, ensuring its reliability, performance, and user-friendliness.
• Handle the setup, configuration, and customization of WordPress environments, including themes, plugins, and core file structures, to align with organizational needs and branding.
• Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to functionality, compatibility, or performance, ensuring the website remains accessible and secure for all users.

TibCERT Infrastructure Security and Functionality Management

• Manage and secure TibCERT’s digital infrastructure, ensuring its operational efficiency, resilience, and protection against cyber threats.
• Collaborate with the TibCERT Response Coordinator to implement and maintain robust security measures, including firewalls, and endpoint protection solutions.
• Monitor infrastructure performance, identify vulnerabilities, and proactively address potential security risks to maintain a fortified digital environment.
• Ensure the infrastructure aligns with TibCERT’s mission to provide secure, reliable systems for cybersecurity operations and community support.

Database Management

• Develop and maintain relational databases critical to Tibet Action and TibCERT’s web applications and infrastructure, ensuring data integrity, availability, and performance.
• Write, optimize, and troubleshoot SQL queries to support efficient data retrieval, storage, and management for organizational applications.
• Perform routine database maintenance tasks, such as backups, indexing, and optimization, to ensure scalability and reliability.
• Collaborate with stakeholders to design and implement database structures that meet the specific needs of Tibet Action’s programs and TibCERT’s security operations.
• Monitor database security, implement access controls, and safeguard sensitive data against unauthorized access or breaches.

Qualifications

• A Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology(IT)/relevant degree and 5 years of experience or 10 years of work experience working on web development and server management.
• Technical Skills and Expertise
  • Content Management Systems (CMS)
    • Advanced proficiency in WordPress, including in-depth knowledge of its file structure, setup, customization, and manual backup processes.
  • Static Site Generators
    • Foundational experience with static site generators and JavaScript frameworks, particularly in generating static exports for lightweight, high-performance websites.
    • Familiarity with Markdown and MDX content workflows to streamline content, creation, and management.
    • Skilled in deploying static sites to serverless platforms, such as GitHub Pages, and other hosting solutions.
  • Web Development
    • Strong command of core web technologies, including HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript, for building responsive and user-friendly interfaces.
    • Familiarity with modern JavaScript frameworks (e.g., React, Vue, or Astro) and package managers (e.g., npm or Yarn) to develop dynamic, scalable web applications.
  • Server Management
    • Proficient in managing Linux-based servers (Ubuntu/Debian), ensuring reliable and secure server operations.
    • Experienced in scripting with Python and Bash to automate tasks and enhance server functionality.
    • Competent in basic database management to support application and website performance.
    • Knowledgeable in implementing and maintaining security infrastructure, including firewalls, Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS), Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPS), and endpoint protection solutions

Compensation & Perks

This is a full time contract position. Compensation is commensurate with experience and is competitive with other non profit organizations.
